イディオムとは

イディオムは日本語の熟語に相当する言葉ですが、言葉本来の意味とはかなりかけ離れた意味で使われることがよくあります。

（例）

1. I'll pick you up at 7 o'clock. （7時に君をむかえに行くよ。）
2. Let's catch up. （久しぶりに話そうよ。）

Pick up の言葉上の意味は「拾い上げる」（図1）ですが、実際に使われている意味は「途中で（主に車で）一緒になって連れていく。」の意味です。（図2）

Collins Cobuild の英英辞典には、When you pick up someone that is waiting to be collected, you go to the place where they are, and take them away, often in a car. とあります

Catch up の言葉上の意味は「追いつく」ですが、実際には「会って話をする」という意味があります。

Collinsの英英辞典には、

If you catch up on friends who have not seen for some time or on their lives, you talk to them and found out what has happened in their lives since you last talked together.

とありますので、単に「会って話をする。」というよりは「久しぶりに会って近況について語り合う。」の意味になります。

日本語に当てはめると「旧交を温める」、という意味になるのでしょうか。会って、前の自分たちに追いつくから来たのでしょうが、見当もつきませんね。

例 When you are in town next week, we must catch up （来週町にきたら久しぶりに語り会おうよ。）
